SAP’s divestments over years

As follow up on my other blog called SAP’s acquisitions over years I try to collects divestments of SAP too. There are not much information on this topic available on internet. Thus, my guess is that most of information will only be added in future when it will come to selling of assets.

08/2022SAP Litmos – VC firm Francisco Partners acquired a corporate learning software business from SAP. SAP Litmos is an online corporate training platform that enables smarter, faster corporate eLearning. The solution is comprised of a powerful LMS (learning management system) and a content-rich training course catalog that make it easy to manage the entire learning program from system implementation and integration to ongoing administration. Litmos company was acquired by CallidusCloud in 2011. Then SAP bought the Litmos as part of its acquisition of U.S. cloud software firm Callidus for $2.4 billion in 2018, rebranding the platform SAP Litmos. The SAP has evaluated that a value propositions and functionalities of the SAP SuccessFactors Learning solution and SAP Litmos solutions overlap. Divesting initiative started in May 2022 as SAP hired adviser to help with this transaction.

07/2020 - Qualtrics IPO - approximately 20 months after its acquisition the Qualtrics is set to go public via preparing its IPO. On 28-Jan-2021 company went public on Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol “XM”.

Flash back to pre 2k years

In this post I look back to pre-2000 years to times when new millennium was approaching. Back then all computer industry was scared in wake of what will happen when computers clock turn from 31.12.1999 23:59:59 to 1.1.2000 00:00:00. This problem was known as year 2000 problem. SAP was watching this space also and preparing its software for this change.

They came up with SAP Note with very famous number: 2000 - Internal SAP AG Year2000 activities. In this Note they briefly described what this year change will bring and advised its customers to prepare their computers system for this change. Initiative of the year 2000 within SAP was driven by so called “Year2000 Taskforce” (y2000@sap-ag.de, sap.com/y2ki and sapnet.sap.com/y2000). The taskforce coordinated all activities related to this change. Covering all known facts, problems, methods, tools, organizational and legal questions.

All analyzing and testing of SAP software done for this year change generated about 130+ (based on my brief count of Note numbers in collective Notes) SAP Notes. They vary from databases and OS related changes by different vendors, date field format adjustments in SAP tables like date 1.1.1 is converted to 1.1.0001, ABAP statements like “WRITE date YY/MM/DD”, file format generated by SAP interfaces and so on.

SAP provided also couple of tools to help customer with testing of their systems (like Safety Check 2000 tool, Verification Tool). Customers were encouraged to setup separate system where they shall simulate the year change and test how the SAP software will be affected.

All in all as we all know whole thing ended up successfully. There were no major interruptions of computer systems neither in SAP systems reported. So what will be next challenge? Year 2038 problem or just year 10,000 problem? Some of us will see that J

Is SAP software used in surveillance?

In March of this year strange allegations related to SAP broke into the media. In particular it was related to possible ties between SAP and NSA. Also other article claimed that SAP is working with US intelligence agencies.

Moreover articles mentioned above suggest that SAP HANA is used by these agencies to help with surveillance. If that is true on one hand it would be good for SAP to claim that even the NSA belongs to circle of its customers. However we lie in post Snowden era where everything related to break of privacy is an issue. On other hand it may not need to be necessary good for SAP to have the NSA as a client. Also SAP claimed its gain in could computing was partially driven by customers who do not want to sit their data in US data centers. Revealing its ties to the NSA may not be again be good for SAP’s push to the cloud.

SAP reacted very rapidly on these claims. They published statement related to it. The statement is that they honor every customer. Regardless either it is from public or private sector around a world. They also contradict any allegations related to so called “back doors” in its software.

Whatever truth is one thing matters. SAP can’t do much about the scenarios on how customers do use their software. Even if it is used to the purposes what claims are suggesting into.

SAP fieldglass

SAP bought this company in 03/2014 and solution for Workforce & Vendor Management Software (VMS) appeared in its portfolio. Vendors or let’s say extended workforces or contingent workers either temporary staff, contractors of all kinds and services delivered via statements of work can be managed by SAP fieldglass. As market of software for contingent workforce is raising this field together with growth of cloud computing became interesting for SAP. Solution is cloud based only and it offers whole bunch of processes to support these kinds of vendor’s data. Processes covers include procurement, statements of work, project management, and payment.

From integration to other SAP’s products point of view the plans are there to integrate the fieldglass with SAP's SuccessFactors HCM software and SAP’s Ariba Network. On top of that integration is planed with ECC’s HCM application. Needless to say that with advert of SAP HANA there will be a kind of HANA powered version of the fieldglass delivered soon or later.

HanaHaus – cafĂ© and community workspace

SAP recently (on March 19th 2015) opened a kind of coffee shop in hearth of Silicon Valley - in Palo Alto. This is just first place of this kind where SAP shows their approach to contribute to public perception of what becoming their flag ship product – HANA. By having it in Palo Alto; SAP wants to show its commitment to innovation and start up spirit which both have great legacy in this location.

What it serves for is following. There are workspaces for rent for individuals or small groups. Place for workshops, small conferences and all kinds of events like hackathons and even movie viewing or standup comedy performance. And more basic purpose is of course to just have a cup of great coffee!

Just one more thing: They serve a Blue Bottle Coffee in hanahaus J

SAP new logo – 2015 and beyond

Last week during SAP TechEd && d-code event in Las Vegas SAP has started to roll its new logo quietly.  The logo started to be appearing on Oct 21 on SAP home page. Afterwards official SAP twitter account (some of other SAP’s twitter accounts also), linkedin and profile and youtube followed.

The logo it-self is major change comparing to previous one. At first SAP completely abandoned blue as color and shape of the former logo. On color side now it is orange but they called it gold. Personally gold is fine with me. I think blue was also better but as gold implies warmness I think it is good move. On the logo shape I’m not that enthusiastic. For me the shape that was something which made SAP unique. When I look back how SAP logo evolved over the time the shape was there for most of company history. As in the new logo an A letter is shaped into some kind of smiley I believe the smiley can be a kind of differentiator for new logo.

So what message SAP delivers with the new logo? It is all about simplicity as announced on this year SAP’s annual SapphireNow conference. See more on SAP simplicity here:

There is one more thing. The new logo is there but there is no any SAP official statement about its lunch. This may seem to be strange. And it was until recently. In discussion thread on SCN finally and SAP employee (Costanza Tedesco - SVP SAP Brand Experience) made statement which seems to be the only one related to the new logo. Basically she shares that currently it was soft launch just in North America and larger lunch will occur in Jan 2015. She also suggests that new gold color was picked because the gold was here for quite a long time – just remember how layout and colors of all SAP presentations...

This is the new SAP Logo 2015 and beyond:

This is its predecessor 2011 – 2014 ????:

- update 23/09/2015 -
SAP's official logo is not the gold color one. Change of the logo to the gold color in Q4 2014 was a "test phase" and it turned out that SAP decided to keep the blue logo.

How to influence SAP

This blog is originally posted on SCN:

How to influence SAP

Over the years SAP developed a few channels of how outside world can reach out to SAP. Through these channels we can potentially influence the SAP world. Here's one example. Imagine that you have a great idea of how to improve particular functionality in SAP's software. You'd like to let the SAP know about it. And surprisingly there are chances how to do it – how to pass the message. Below I list and briefly describe those channels. The motivation for this blog is to basically gather basic information on those channels into one place.

1. IdeaPlace ideas.sap.com introduced in 2010 enables you to post idea for new feature or product enhancement of SAP software, solution etc. You can also browser already posted ideas by others, vote for ideas which promote them and subscribe to the ideas to be updated about its further developments. See ideaplace site and following SAP Note for more details. To use the site you need you Service Marketplace (SMP) account although you can browse ideas without login.
For more information follow this SAP Note:
1515837 - How To: Enhancement Request Process - "Idea Place" - BI solutions

Also notice that while posting new ideas you need to assign it to existing directory. The directory represents area of SAP software/product. At the moment all Business Analytics (BA) – covering BI as well, Enterprise Performance Management (EPM), Data Warehousing, Human Capital Management (HCM), Mobility, on-demand, NetWeaver solutions are now available in Idea Place.

2. SAP Influence Program service.sap.com/influence and influence.sap.com (SMP login required). Apart of IdeaPlace there is a program called Customer Influence. In general you need to be really SAP customer to participate in SAP influence. This means you need to have either license or support contract from SAP. Generally speaking via SAP Influence you can participate with SAP on development of products. There are two flavors of this program:
- Customer Connection
- Customer Engagement Initiative and get involved

Below I describe those two plus the others.

3. Customer Connection service.sap.com/customer-connection (SMP login required) or sap.com/cc - SAP customer with maintenance contracts and SAP User Groups can suggest improvement of SAP software. These so called Improvement Requests are gathered into so called Focus Topic cycles. Once particular request scores by significant customers it is being review by SAP development teams. Once developed by them customer can implement it in form of either SAP Notes or SAP Support Packages (SP).
There is actually more within Customer Connection initiative. All improvements which were delivered can be found on dedicated sites:
sapimprovementfinder.com – public access
service.sap.com/findinnovation - SMP login required
You can search for improvements and get to know how to implement them.
As my background is mostly Data Warehousing I'm very glad to see improvements from this area like:
BI Content Migration of BW 3.x based data flows - SAP Note 1601140
Customer Connection: (NW 730SP11): Complete deletion of data - SAP Note 1864773

To learn more details of Customer Connection following links:
For both above links SMP login required.

4. Customer Engagement Initiative (CEI) - Within this initiative again you as SAP customer or partner can get hands on early development and by this to influence innovations in SAP planned products releases.
To learn more about CEI go to following link:

5. SAP Mentors group - Mentors are selected individuals from community of the SAP Ecosystem. To become member of mentors you need to be nominated by community like SCN. Basically it is extra league of experts into variety of SAP topics.
For more info on Mentors follow links:
1559276 - What are the SAP Mentors, what is Mentoring?

6. SAP customer/user groups - SAP is exchanging knowledge in technical and functional areas within its user groups. Also within this channel user can share experience of SAP products, knowledge and ideas. There are regional SAP user groups across all continents. Just to name few biggest: ASUG — Americas' SAP Users' Group - www.asug.com, DSAG — German-Speaking SAP User Group – Germany www.dsag.de. There are several types of membership available. You can basically join as individual or as a company. Check particular user group sire for details. Above regional groups there is also SAP User Group Executive Network (SUGEN). The SUGEN consists of leaders from multiple regional groups. By this all regional groups are united within dialog with SAP.
To learn more about customer/user group use following link:

Design Thinking at SAP

These days the term of design thinking became very popular buzz word. All companies are pretending to be following the pattern of design thinking. So what is it in nut shell?

Methodology commonly referred to as design thinking is a proven and repeatable problem-solving protocol that any business or profession can employ to achieve extraordinary results (from Wikipedia). It is discipline that uses designer's sensibility and methods to match what user's need and what is feasible to achieve with technologies. Basically within the design thinking has three essences: Human, business and technology.

You may wonder what is the topic of design thinking doing on my SAP related Blog? Actually design thinking is actually used at SAP to transition SAP as software company to cloud company. It means that classic SAP which is knows (or even is famous) because of on-premise ERP systems now wants to turn it-self to SaaS model delivery of software.

Well in SAP case it may also be just a buzzword. However it seems they consider this initiative seriously. One of SAP’s founders Hasso Plattner is involved in so called Hasso Plattner Institute of Design which is design school based in Stanford University. The school was founded by David Kelley who is well known as buddy of Steve Jobs. David’s company Ideo was behind of scenes of many famous Apple products.

In closing I would just point that transition from purely on-premise software company to the cloud company will not be easy. SAP really needs to change its mindset. In today’s world where almost no companies do mind to store their data into the cloud it will be extreme competition with pure cloud companies. Similarly we can see how other companies not only SAP are struggling with that transition. As an example I mention SAP’s archrival – Oracle. Last week they reported not very promising result in 2nd consecutive quarter. Well maybe SAP is better positioned for that transition with their HANA offerings. But that’s something which only future will tell us.

Deactivating SAP functionality - hierarchical pricing

There might several reasons occur why customer and SAP would want to deactivate certain functionality provided with the software. From customer perspective: if there is more than one version of same functionality (e.g. old feature being replaced by new version of same thing) customer may want to employ new version of the thing and switch off the old one. In that case there are some customizing parameters provided (e.g. in form of tables, system profile parameters etc.) by SAP to support that kind of switch. Basically in this case it is up to the customer free will which version of the same functionality want to use.
However there might be cases that SAP wants to customer pursue to disable certain functionality. This is especially in case of patent infringement. Other organizations of individuals may claim ownership of ideas/algorithms etc. used in software. That would be typical case why software vendor would do that. Recently this happened for SAP’s solution like R/3, Enterprise, ECC, CRM, SRM, GTS.  They all are using so called hierarchical access feature in pricing and pricing-related functionality build into above listed solutions. There was a court trial being held between company Versata and SAP in the matter of hierarchical access feature. As the trail has been settled so far US customer of SAP are obligated to deactivate to this functionality. Herewith SAP is providing SAP Notes which automates deactivation of the functionality.
I’m not judging who is right or wrong in this case. However it is not beneficial for customer of both parties. As per this example it is obvious how monstrous, chaotic and messy are patents proceedings are and how time consuming it takes to settle it down.

For more information review following SAP Notes:
1600482 - Hierarchical access functionality (seems to be main note)
1645516 - Deactivation of hierarchical access functionality

1643194 - Deactivation of hierarchical access functionality
1600091 - Deactivation of hierarchical access functionality
