miniSAP – where to download it?

- updated on 17th of Feb 2021 –

SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP Developer Edition 7.52 SP01 (not available for download any more) – my installation blog

SAP NetWeaver App Server 7.03 SP03 Trial, Ready for ABAP in Eclipse (not available for download any more) – my installation blog

SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP 7.02 SP11 with Gateway SP04 Trial - Ready for SAP Gateway (not available for download any more) – my installation blog

Few remarks: most of below download links is not valid anymore. Sap store site at store.sap.com is now defunct. It was moved to another URL (partner.store.sap.com) but it is only available for SAP partners.
Going forward main download site is located at  developers.sap.com/trials-downloads.html

- update on 28th of July 2014 –  SCN was apparently doing "summer clean up" and a lot of downloads are not available any more. My advise to all of you is to keep a copy of any trial/demo system you download. You never know when it will disappear from the downloads :(

- update on 26th of Jan 2014 – SCN has migrated downloads area. Now it is a part of SAP Store -  DB & Technology. For details see my new post here: Download developer edition and trial version of SAP software

- article updated on 18th of Mar 2013 – all content that is crossed out is not available anymore.

I’m getting this question very often therefore I want to summarize possibilities how to obtain miniSAP software wither to download it from internet or to buy SAP book with some CDs/DVDs included.

1. Download it: Main source of miniSAP is SDN. Navigate to Download section and choose SAP NetWeaver Main Releases. Over here you can find currently (mid. of Nov 2007 March 2013):

Suite of SAP NetWeaver 2004 platform:
SAP NW 2004 - Java Trial Version – JAVA only for WINDOWS platform
SAP NW 2004 - Trial Version on Linux– JAVA only for LINUX platform

Suite of SAP NetWeaver Composite Environment (CE) 2004s platform:

*- Version of miniSAP for LINUX was formerly called Technology TestDrive for mySAP.com on Linux. All LINUX releases of miniSAP can be found here. See also area of SDN dedicated to LINUX.

Other source of miniSAP only on LINUX (NS4) might be official SAP’s ftp server: ftp://ftp.sap.com. It is possible to download all SAP software which is available on SDN plus SAP GUI and its patches, SAP/MAX DB, LINUX lab stuff etc. Use user anonymous@ftp.sap.com to connect this ftp server. This is also not valid anymore. As of 1st of April 2012 all LINUX test drives were removed from FTP as well as SAP GUI downloads. For LINUX miniSAP version proceed via SAP Shop (see below point no. 3): http://www.sap.com/shop -> SAP Knowledge Shop and search for the following material numbers:

  * SAP NW2004s Testdrive MaxDB: 50077574
  * SAP NW04s Testdrive Linux DB2 x86: 50083014

More versions like WAS 6.10, 6.20, 6.30, 6.40 were available on SDN before. At the moment they are not available and it is just a history.

You can find some versions of official’s SAP trial software on peer-to-peer networks (torrents, etc.). There are also available commercial full versions of SAP software but I strongly recommend to do not download it. On one hand you will break software license and on other hand you will barely be able to install it and customize it for using. Please be careful.

2. Do get it from book: First book which was issued with miniSAP was ABAP objects. I bought this book in 2001 as its first edition. At that time it was miniSAP 4.6D included with this book. Meanwhile this is a second edition which is available with mini SAP NetWeaver 7.1 Version. I assume this is same version which can be downloaded from SDN as SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) - ABAP Trial Version – for WINDOWS platform. More information about this book can be found here.

Another book is The Official ABAP Reference. Here is SAP Web AS 6.20 test version included.  Find more information here.

For JAVA based developments on SAP NetWeaver you can use book Developing Accessible Applications with SAP NetWeaver. It is not clear to me which version is included in here. I assume it is SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) - Java Trial Version plus some NetWeaver Developer Studio based on Eclipse.

For some information how to install miniSAP: SAP NetWeaver 2004s ABAP Trial Version; see my previous post here.

3. Order it via SAP Shop:
Ordering of DVDs with miniSAP installation has been dismantled over the years.

SAP AG is running its own online shops long time ago. Currently there are available three types of shops.
SAP Merchandise Shop specializes in a variety of gifts for business and leisure.
Second one SAP Knowledge Shop for Customers and Partners offers knowledge products, publications, documentation CDs for SAP customers and partners; requires an SAP Service Marketplace (S-user) ID.
The third one SAP Knowledge Shop has knowledge products, including online documentations, books, Delta study guides, and e-learning offerings for everybody.

You can use its Download section to download CD Mini Web AS 6.20 ABAP Engine (3) for 29,80 EUR and CD Mini SAP Web Application Server 6.10 for same price. Before SDN this shop played significant role in miniSAP software distribution nowadays importance of it is decreasing.

- closing note: -

I’ll dedicate some more posts of my blog in future to miniSAP. Meanwhile if you need to register your installation of miniSAP follow up this link.

SDN’s Mentorship program

SDN started to introduce new and new very interesting programs recently. After this September’s announcement of SDN NetWeaver Subscriptions program new program is coming called SDN mentorship program. The aim is to recognize best SAP people in particular knowledge area and then to evangelize SAP technologies within the others SDN members. Such an expert will be supported by mentor program to spread his/her knowledge within the community. Member is selected for limited time period – 1 year. Later somebody else can replace mentor while he/she is recognized by other: mentors, community members, committee from ECO, CN, PM and development. Benefits of mentoring are quite highly valuable: Invitation to SAP events, VIP Access to SAP Information, VIP Seating (TechEd, Sapphire, etc.), and maybe in future some direct access to SAP Development. So hurry up and become SAP mentor.

Some more information about this program you can find on Mark Finnern blog.

How many lines of ABAP code are inside of SAP?

Quite tricky question but have you ever think how many lines of ABAP code is inside of SAP? How many years it could take to get it run everything? Normally such a questions make no sense. Jon Read writes in his blog what he heard in TechEd 2007. Vishal Sikka, SAP's chief technology officer was daring enough to tell there that there are still 238 million lines of ABAP code in SAP. I’m not sure if he counts only code in ECC (former R/3) or in NetWeaver or both but this number looks very impressive. All what can be added in here is that people who know ABAP are not going to loose their jobs soon.

Label “Last data update” in SAP BI web reporting

Imagine following case: we have BEx report based on MultiProvider which combines data from several InfoCubes. When you run such a report in web browser system displays label “Last data update” by default in web template.

InfoCubes involved in this report are loaded in different times. Loading time of which infocube is taken to the report? It is logical that it is the earliest time of load to image at least roughly how “old” the data is in report. It means a system shows oldest loading date/time. In case you want to display here the most recent loading date/time you can adjust your web template with text element according SAP note 594735.
