Number of Processes for DTP Parallel Processing

To speed up runtime of DTP it is possible to parallelize it. There is a possibility to set a maximum number of DTP instances that run in parallel. In t-codes like RSA1->DTP or RSDTP in its menu Goto->Settings for Batch Manager->Number of Processes.

This settings is stored in table RSBATCHPARALLEL (Control Parallel Batch Processes) in field PARALLEL_PROCS (Maximum Number of All Parallel Processes for This type). Corresponding domain is RSBATCHPAR. Table can be read in a way that in field PROCESS_TYPE = DTP_LOAD and into PC_VARIANT = DTP technical name.

Similarly, in t-code RSBATCH there is a possibility to set this via button Parameter Settings under which also number of processes for DTP parallel processing. See more info about the t-code RSBATCH here. This can be setup either set:

1. For all DTPs – means default value for all DTP that do not have it setup, default value is 3

2. Or via button Mass Maintenance of ALL Settings for Parallel Processing for particular DTP

Degree of Parallelization in SAP BW

Normally by SAP BW systems a large portions of data is processed. Such a data volume normally cannot be processed by single process. Depending on the available hardware resources the process that crunches the data should be parallelized. SAP BW systems similarly as any other moderns DWH systems is supporting this feature. The number of processes that are processing the data is called degree of parallelization.

In the SAP BW it is possible to define the degree of Parallelization in t-code RSBATCH for multiple different tasks/objects within the SAP BW. There are (in version 7.5 SP15) about 106 different processes. As per table RSPROCESSTYPES these includes:

Notice that for not all the above mentioned processes the parallelization make sense so not for all of them are the degree of parallelization is possible to set. Actually, the setting itself is done in section called “Settings for Parallel Processing” for those processes that it can be set.
The settings set in this t-code are stored in table RSBATCHPARALLEL - Control Parallel Batch Processes. Maintaining the table itself is coded in FM RSBATCH_MAINTAIN_PAR_SETTINGS.

How to check what is your SAP system type?

SAP system type is an function of the system in the SAP system group from the point of view of the Transport Organizer.

What is the SAP system type or sometimes referred as SAP system class can be revealed from parameters of SAP system. These parameters itself are normally set via system profile parameters function (t-codes RZ10 / RZ11).

1. transport/systemtype defines if the system belongs from a transport point-of-view to the world of SAP development systems (param value = SAP) or if it is a customer system (value = "CUSTOMER" and it is default value). The parameter is set during installation of the system. The parameter affects the transport behavior of the system (e.g. range of transport request numbers) on the correction system (working in the SAP namespace SSCR, etc.), and on upgrade behavior (keyword modifications).

2. auth/sap_test_system parameter indicates that the SAP system is special test system.  If so value of the param is set to ON.

3. auth/fa_test_system parameter indicates that the SAP system is type of test system marked as final assembly system. If so value is set to ON.
If any of these parameters are present in the SAP system it means that the system is based on ABAP Stack.

As alternative to t-codes RZ10 / RZ11 function module TR_SYS_PARAMS can be used to check of what is value of transport/systemtype among other technical information like System Change Option, SID, Change Option for Client-Dependent Customizing Objects, Change Option for Repository Objects in Logon Client, Client Role, Recording Client for Switch BC Sets.

Report RSPPARAM – display profile parameters

Today - just very quick one related one useful tool. There are transactions available in the system to see what are values of system profile’s parameters. Just to name few:

RZ10                 Maintain Profile Parameters – complex one, you can choose different profiles and
its version, and you can maintain the parameters here via Extended maintenance radio button

RZ11                 Profile Parameter Maintenance – you can display just one parameter at the same time and change its value

But what to do if I need to see values of several parameters? I do not want to go one by one within TA RZ11… There is nice and handy ABAP report called RSPPARAM. It allows displaying of current settings of the several profile parameters at the same time in one screen. Moreover I can select pattern for name of params using wildcards.

PS: I mentioned this report for first time in this blog at this post: Strange question marks appeared in SAP user interface?
