Possibilities of BW projects documenting – InfoProviders and MultiProviders

Here’s another post from series how to document BW projects. Other posts were dedicated to queries and transformations.

Even for infoproviders like cube, DSO, SPO, multiproviders we can reuse BW metadata repository. This feature is very simple accessible just by selecting particular InfoProvider and hitting F1 key. A new web browser session is opened with details on particular object:

However you won’t see here any assignments of objects. But for this you can hit F1 key on corresponding transformation.

In case of multiproviders situation is different. It is because there is no assignment of infoobject from underlying cubes provided in BW metadata repository. One possibility I found is to use FM BAPI_MPRO_GETDETAIL. This FM is documenting multiprovider mappings.

You will get nice overview of all dimensions/infoobjects of that multiprovider. Basically what I smost important here is table PARTINFOOBJECTSIDENT where all the assigment of IOs from particlar cubes are happening.

For documenting of other types of BW’s objects use following FMs:

InfoCube - BAPI_CUBE_GETDETAIL
InfoObject Catalog - BAPI_IOBC_GETDETAIL
InfoObject - BAPI_IOBJ_GETDETAIL
InfoPackage - BAPI_IPAK_GETDETAIL
InfoSet - BAPI_ISET_GETDETAIL
DSO - BAPI_ODSO_GETDETAIL

Possibilities of BW projects documenting – Transformations

Some time ago I blogged about possibilities of BW BEx queries documenting. There are many other BW objects being developed during BW implementation that are also needed to be documented. In this post I focus on transformations. Following are the options to document transformation (TRFN) that I came across:

1. BW metadata repository: It is available in TA RSA1 which you select particular TRFN and press F1 button. It open web browser with page generated out of web dynpro RSO_METADATA_REPOSITORY. You can either save this page in HTML format or embed it into your documentation as attached file. Other possibility is to just include URL link (e.g. http://host:port/SAP/BC/WEBDYNPRO/SAP/RSO_METADATA_ REPOSITORY?SAP-LANGUAGE=E&objvers=A&tlogo=TRFN&objnm= 0S75JWX2AOYX9XLI6D2TOKXH42ILYYNR ) to this page in your documentation.

2. Tabular overview: Functionality is available in TA RSA1: while you in display/change screen of TRFN choose Tabular overview from Extras menu. You get new pop up window with overview of all IOs used, Rules details, Start/End Routine. You can copy content of this window to your documentation via clipboard.

3. Save as picture: From display/change screen in TA RSA1 you have Save as picture functionality available. You can afterwards include this picture into your documentation.

Possibilities of BEx Queries documenting

A lot of people are struggling with BEx queries in lot of areas. For example when you need to know how particular key figure is calculated. This can be very painful even more in case you have several nested structures where one key figure is comprised from several others and those are again calculated, restricted etc over and over again.
However there are some possibilities how to see query in different view apart of regular development tool – Bex Query Designer.

  1. TA RSRTQ (ABAP report RSRQ_QUERYDEFINITION) - Query Definition.

On selection screen of this tool you can choose the query which definition you would like to see. On the output screen you can see all particular properties of the query: Query Properties, Filter, Characteristic Restrictions, Selection, Default Values, Rows/Columns, Free Characteristics, Rows, Columns, Cells, Formulas, etc.

  1. Metadata repository, this is pretty know method how to see basic properties of BEx Query. You can access it from TA RSA1->Metadata Repository:
