SAP Lumira product family and versions

As a follow up on my older post about Lumira on where to download it I’m adding more information about the Lumira it-self and also a list of available versions and corresponding release SAP Notes.

SAP Lumira is formerly known as SAP Visual Intelligence and it is successor of SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio 1.x. Following favors of the Lumira are available:

1.   SAP Lumira Server is a processing server for Lumira content on SAP BI Platform. Add-on installation to BI platform. Hosts execution runtime of Discovery stories and Designer applications. Business users view SAP Lumira documents within BI Launchpad.

2. SAP Lumira client part has the following components:

2.1 Lumira Discovery: Rich client application used to visualize and create ad-hoc stories about data. Targeting business key users to connect, acquire, manipulate, and merge data – work with live or imported data.

2.2 Lumira Designer: Rich client app for professional designers of corporate analysis applications based on SAP BW, SAP HANA and universe data sources. Supports shared UI elements (e.g. headers, footers, toolbars). Supports planning applications. It is the product of choice when full support for BW and HANA data models and engine capabilities is required

2.3 Launch pad viewer: Web application that acts a window for users to view information in the form of data, visualizations and reports. It also allows users to export the content to other business applications (like Microsoft Excel) and also to save it to a specified location. Users can also use various analytical tools to explore the information.

3. SAP Lumira Web Applications: This is embedded within the BI Launchpad and CMC applications to allow access to Lumira content within BI Launchpad and CMC (Viewer and Application).

4. SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) platform server: This is where the SAP Lumira Server integrates into BOBJ platform.

5. SAP Lumira, server version for SAP HANA (LS4H): As of the Lumira version 1.28 SAP discontinued future updates to LS4H and Lumira Cloud. See this Note and blog.

Options of SAP Lumira and where to download Lumira?

I introduced Lumira in my earlier post here. It is basically visualization software that enables to tell story about the data. Speaking simpler it is nothing else just BI frontend tool. To play with it just need and input file with any kind of the data you like which gets imported into the tool and visualization can start…

As most of today’s only SAP software; the Lumira is coming in 2 flavors:

First one is classic on premise deployment. To deploy it e.g. for educational/demo or training purposes just follow this page saplumira.com/download. 32 and 64 bit version are available for MS Windows 7 or 8 platforms. Furthermore in case you are enterprise user there are following options of the Lumira:

Lumira Desktop – this is the one that you actually can download for free from above mentioned link. It enables you to develop visualizations just based on e.g. your flat files data. Again this edition is suitable for demo/training/evaluation purposes. Currently available version is 1.22.

Lumira Edge – speciality about Edge edition is to be used by departments where visualization can be shared within their members. Currently available version is 1.0. More info can be found here.

Lumira Server – capable of visualizing, story creating and sharing datasets and stories while utilizing SAP HANA repository. The Server edition is installed in HANA server. Currently available version is 1.22.

Lumira Extension - Data Access – SDK for extending and customizing Lumira Desktop's data source access capability. Currently available version is 1.22.

Lumira Extension – Visualization – SDK for extending Lumira Desktop's visualizations. Currently available version is 1.22.

Lumira Visualization Extension Plugin for SAP Web IDE Guide – Plugin into WebIDE to extend Lumira visualization using Vizpacker plugin. Currently available version is 1.0.

Cloud is second option here. At following page: cloud.saplumira.com the cloud version is available. Right now it is coming with 1 GB of free storage to store data and visualizations. There are options of Lumira in SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) e.g. deployed together with SAP BI 4. These are part of Analytics in the Cloud.

SAP BI Strategy and BI portfolio simplification

Being either SAP consultant or guy at SAP’s customer side we all know that there are many BI tools in SAP’s portfolio. Partially it is caused by acquisitions done by SAP over the years but also partially by SAP’s pursuit of new technologies and offerings built on top of them. Basically like in every part of life a lifecycle comes in place and the new offerings (Lumira) are supposed to replace old technologies/tools (BEx) in long run.

It is clear that there has to be done something about all these tools. This is not only to relieve a worries of customers bit. But also as SAP is sticking to their newest strategy: Run simple as echoed in this year spring at annual SapphireNow conference in Orlando. As per run simple mantra it should be up to customers to keep existing BI content in place but from SAP side there is a focus on few core products allowing customers to do possible migration from existing tools to the new ones.

This means the portfolio of SAP BI products should potentially shrink a bit. Some tools will not be developed further and their functions will be covered by other tools. Possible paths of replacements can be as follows:

SAP BusinessObjects Explorer -> SAP Lumira

SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards (Xcelsius) -> Design Studio

Of course one can argument that tools which is supposed to left behind have features which are not included yet in those who are supposed to stay. There are issues like this but there is no “do migration now!” approach. Customers can keep using what they use at the moment but they should evaluate and test new things just in case to be prepared for migration which may come in future.

HILO = SAPVisi = Photon = SAP Lumira

One of last week SAPphirenow (14-16 may 2013) outcomes was announcement of new name for SAP Visual Intelligence. From this time on the new name is SAP Lumira. Tool initially started as project HILO as new generation of data visualization software. Yep! Even after all tools acquired from BusinessObjects SAP indented to create a new tool. Just needed to say that project was driven within BusinessObjects portfolio particularly in what is BusinessObjects Explorer. HILO was Desktop Edition of BusinessObjects Explorer. Around spring of 2012 it was aimed to access, manipulate and match up data in order to create rich, beautiful and highly interactive data visualizations. 

Then moving to end of 2012 year a Visual Intelligence (in short SAPVisi) was chosen as new name. It was the data manipulation and visualization tool. Enables to connect various data sources, select and clean data, manipulate and visualize data with a diverse offer of graphical charts and tables. SAP Visual Intelligence can be installed locally and can operate on data either remotely or on locally stored datasets. The outputs (e.g. charts) created (in format .SViD) can be saved as files and sent out by email. File is a document that contains the data source connection information, the data definition and data, and the visualizations. Datasets can be published to SAP Hana, and documents published to SAP Streamwork activities, etc.

Early in 2013 a project "Photon" came in to the game. It represents SAP’s move to cloud analytics. There are some companies (e.g. gooddata) which came with this concept earlier. Cloud analytics is a service model in which elements of the data analytics process are provided through a public or private cloud. In broader terms cloud analytics can be service like hosted data warehouses, software-as-a-service business intelligence (SaaS BI known as on-demand BI or cloud BI) and cloud-based social media analytics. SaaS BI may involve delivery of BI apps to users from a hosted/cloud location. Photon is set to materialize SAPVisi in forms like self-service data visualization in the cloud. It remains to be part of SAP’s BI OnDemand.

Finally last week Photon got official name SAP Lumira. Lumira positioned as new innovation for self-service BI. Lumira comes on two flavors, as:

SAP Lumira – Desktop app

SAP Lumira Cloud – Cloud app

BTW: SAP BusinessObjects Explorer stays stand-alone as Lumira and Explorer are complementary and integrated. SAP Lumira allows Analysts to load, mash-up and manipulate data and then share their results back into SAP BusinessObjects Explorer for distribution over the web and onto mobile devices. See FAQs.
